So the Snuze threw a check engine light today. I was merging on the highway and I looked down and BLAM! CEL! So I slowed down, turned off the radio and A/C and scanned my gagues, everything seemed fine. I drove slowly and listed, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I completed my journey and the car ran completely fine.
So I went to Autozone and borrowed their scanner and got a P0299, which is a “turbo underboost condition.” I did a little googling and apparently this is a somewhat common problem with ‘11-12 cars and is the result of a malfunctioning wastegate. And since the wastegate is internal on these cars the only fix is a whole new turbo unit.
The good news is my car has a 100k mile powertrain warranty, and only has 93k miles on the clock. Looks like the Snuze will be getting a new turbo soon.

Interesting. My father had a 2011 optima turbo. It had a waste gate issue 3 times. Each time it put the car on limp mode. It seems like this is a potential week spot on many cheap turbo cars.

Go with a bigger turbo MORE POWER!!!!!

My B6 A4 1.8T needed a turbo because of that same condition as well. Wastegate actuator crapped out.
It sucked. Of course, it was running 18-21 psi most of its life but still... ugh.

Supposedly GM fixed the problem for 2013+ cars. Based on what I’ve read the engineers picked a sub-standard material to build the wastegate actuator out of. Once the problem was recognized they changed the spec to a better material and the failure is no longer a problem.
What I don’t think people appreciate is turbos generate A LOT of heat. They are hard on mechanical parts, oil, cooling, everything really.

I think that would be awesome - I don’t know why GM doesn’t make a Cruze SS with the 2.0T. They offer that engine in the Buick which is built on the same chassis, so I don’t see a reason they can’t.
But since I’m still barely under warraty I think I’ll just get it fixed. I don’t really have the time or space to do a 2.0T swap on my DD.

Similarly, right now is I’m tuned and I want to reflash the ECU back to stock before I take it in to avoid any hassle at the dealership.

Yeah, part of me feels like early turbo cars from the 80s would have had a very different reputation if they had full synthetic oil back then. My 2011 lancer ralliart has a turbo-4 and the oil is black within 2000 miles. The stress that full synthetic stands up to is incredible. The heat coming off my hood after a canyon run is incredible.

I agree, I think that would have helped a lot.
Even my little Cruze with it’s 1.4 is tough on oil.
